HP today announced their plans to open-source the Tru64 Unix Advanced File System (AdvFS), claiming that the available code will offer better uptime, security and performance to those who seek to develop upon it. HP's release of their source code is happening underneath the GPLv2 license, something that might keep Linux kernel developers a bit happier.

AdvFS was originally developed in the early 1990s, though much of its growth and development was privately developed. HP claims that releasing this will also give a much wider audience access to “Enterprise” file systems, saying that AdvFS is a perfect fit for the high-demand workloads expected of servers today.
