We already heard a rumor about this back in April, but Sony has now confirmed it's planning to offer downloadable movies on the PlayStation 3 sometime this summer. The company sees this as an important way to drive non-game sales and should, in a small way, also help them achieve their goal of turning a profit with the PlayStation business by March 2009.

The announcement came light on details so it's unclear what the prices would be or even if the service will include TV shows and music video downloads as on the Xbox Live Marketplace. More details are expected to be unveiled at the upcoming E3 gaming convention next month. In addition to the video service the company announced "Life with PlayStation," which will let users take a satellite's-eye view to literally spin the globe and read international news by clicking on dozens of cities.
