Wii outsells Xbox 360 in U.S.

The Nintendo Wii has outsold its competitors by quite a margin month after month. But while it’s been the top selling console worldwide since late last year, with NPD’s latest numbers in Nintendo is now touting first place among consoles in the US as well – besting Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and its one-year lead.

During June, 666,000 Wii consoles were sold in the US, according to the market research firm, raising its total sales count in the country to 10.9 million units. By comparison, Microsoft sold 219,800 Xbox 360 consoles in the US for a total of 10.5 million. Sony’s PlayStation 3 continues to bring up the rear, though it certainly got a boost from the release of “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots,” which helped the company sell 405,500 consoles last month.

On the software side of things, six of the top 10 best-sellers for June are Nintendo-platform games as well, though Metal Gear Solid 4 topped the list with about 1 million units. Check out the rest of the numbers here.

"Sony’s PlayStation 3 continues to bring up the rear"??? Maybe in total US sales but it's outsold the 360 week over week in the US for almost 8 months now norrowing the total sales gap. It still has a ways to go but the 360 is on a sales decline. The PS3 is also about to pass the 360 in total sales in europe(and rest of world) very soon. The Wii outsells Xbox 360 in U.S. is old news...

In the past 8 months, only a few weeks ago did the PS3 receive a spike in sales, clearly a reaction to MGS, otherwise they could be said as runnign neck and neck: [url]http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=Wii®1=America&

So if the Xbox 360 has 12 Million Console Systems sold since launch in North America, the Wii has just now passed that total with 12.8 Million systems sold since launch.

Total sales become a relevant figure when you want to measure the total gamer installed base for each individual console... that doesn't necessarily contradict month to month or future sales outlooks.

Julio, that's the most important point to make here. But I'm curious if they have an attach rate to go along with these new figures. I own both the 360 and the Wii, and I have about a 3:1 ratio of games for the 360 over the Wii. In cases where a game is available on all systems, I tend to grab the 360 version first. I'd venture a guess that I'm not alone. Even if the Wii is ahead in total systems sold, I wonder if that story holds true for game titles sold? It would seem to me that a developer would want to know both figures.
