Diablo III lead designer talks about art
For all eager Blizzard fans looking forward to Diablo III, some more nice tidbits have been revealed by Jay Wilson, lead designer for the game. In a recent interview, he talked a lot about the new art style used in the game and how it impacted the design. He talks about criticisms, primarily how many were worried it would resemble World of Warcraft too much, thus ruining the dark and creepy atmosphere of Diablo 1 and 2.
He mentioned, for instance, how much more gruesome they can and will be with a series like Diablo, as opposed to the more “family-friendly” WoW. If you're a fan of the Diablo series it's unlikely you've been disappointed by each successive release in the past, and I feel confident that Blizzard can deliver again in the next installment.

Nice to see blizzard did was blizzard does best: Ignore the fanbase. (note the lowercase B)The release of Diablo III footage at blizzcon distressed alot of diehard fans of the Diablo series.Fans said: "It's too pretty, the art direction is screwed, nothing like the dark and gritty realm of the old games".Naturally blizzard replies with:"We hear the complaint that it looks like World of Warcraft"Durr. One, the main complaint wasn't that at all.. And even when blizzard addresses this 'main' problem, they basically say "We don't Care!". It makes I for one, as a diehard fan, Sick. |

From the gameplay they turned it from a hardcore game that would piss you off when you die ( If playing with highest difficulty where you can't replay that character when dead ) to some easy-mode trash. The gameplay footage showed almost every monster drop a health potion that makes it nearly impossible to die, and the art design went from a dark environment that would make you scared to some crap that looks like someone opened up WoW's model database file and some open source map editor and started dragging and dropping. |
