Nintendo would like to see the DS used as a media player in the future, with the company planning to release a new model of the device before the end of the year. The new model would support playing music and taking pictures, expanding the world's most popular handheld console. This adds on to the consoles ability to play certain types of video, such as mp4. There's no mention if they plan to increase the ability of the DS to play media in the future.

The new version of the DS is not expected to cost more than the existing models. Is Nintendo trying to move in on the iPod market? If so, it seems odd they'd want to do it with the DS, which doesn't lend itself as much to the "in your pocket" media player profile. Specific details on what type of music files it could handle and what sort of camera hardware will be inside the unit weren't revealed.
