Microsoft lists top Xbox 360 games for 2008

Microsoft has revealed the twenty most-played games of 2008 based upon unique users connected to Xbox Live, and the list isn’t exactly shocking. According to the company’s Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb, Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 (both released in 2007) hold the first two slots in the countdown, respectively, while the next three spots include Grand Theft Auto IV and the two Gears of War games.

While the numbers have shown a resounding victory for first person shooter titles, the music genre also made an appearance on the list, with Guitar Hero III coming in seventh place and Rock Band occupying slot number 10. Interestingly, several demos made the top 20 when their retail counterpart didn’t, including Mirror's Edge and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. The full list is available here along with statistics for the best-selling Xbox Live Arcade titles and most-played original Xbox games.

The Force Unleashed was way overhyped. The only friend I had that liked the game is just obsessed with Jedi too much, and was the same with it as a DBZ fan was with the Budokai series.

As for Mirror's Edge, I think people are finally protesting EA and not buying their releases (Other than Rock Band, but I don't even want to get into that crap). Recent sales rates seem to show that trend is picking up.
