AMD preparing Atom-smashing platform?
CEO Dirk Meyer outlined some rough plans AMD has, including what sort of hardware to expect and what that hardware is intended to do. The company is going to unveil a new platform in the near future intended to directly compete with Atom, the primary selling points being low power consumption, a small profile and a cheaper price than Intel's offerings. The platform will be distinct from Puma and Tigris, AMD's mainstream notebook platforms.
It will not be considered a “netbook” platform, however, with Meyer expressing doubt that the term will even exist for much longer due to the blurring lines between higher-performance notebook hardware and lower-end netbook hardware. No other details were revealed about AMD's upcoming platform, which is expected to be released sometime next year.

Ah AMD you have so much potential, why do you respond so slowly. They should have switched to this two years ago when they were first getting trounced by the Intels C2D. Instead they tried to go head to head with the Phenon and things didn't turn out so well. |

It's sad, because they had such potential for a while. They're producing some great products now, but they're just not competitive anymore... besides their gpus. People will argue with me, of course, because they're AMD advocates... but I used to be one, too. They've just slacked behind and don't produce anything that really stands out anymore. ;/ |

They really should have gotten on the netbook wagon earlier. Still, it'll be interesting to see what comes out, and if the accompanying graphics solution rivals or outperforms nVidia's 'Ion' . |
