NVIDIA will sell entire finished GeForce FX boards to third party vendors? Possibly to ensure the quality of their products, yes.

"Nvidia is said to have decided to handle all the design and production of new GeForce FX (NV30) graphics cards to ensure product stability and quality. According to industry sources, Nvidia will only release the more simplified NV31 and NV34 chips to card makers for product design."

Is the FX name doomed? This sounds like what 3DFX did and we know what happend to them

From what I understand it doesn't sound too bad if the process is well managed. Unlike 3dfx case where own branding was the problem, here it looks like NVIDIA is just trying to make sure the quality is optimum for the cards, though this could make them more expensive, I believe, not because of the quality process involved but the larger number of steps until the card ships to the retail shops.
