iPhone rumors are coming hot and heavy as we dive into summer. The latest scuttlebutt claims the next iPhone will feature a 12-megapixel main camera that's optimized to shoot 4K video and 240 frames per second slow-motion clips.
The rumor reportedly comes from a Foxconn employee posting to Weibo. To support the claim, the user posted what looks to be internal documentation discussing the camera module.
If true, this would be the first megapixel bump in quite some time. Apple has up to this point declined to play the megapixel game, instead opting to boost the overall quality of images through other techniques. This strategy has paid off as the past few generations of iPhone have been at or near the top of the "best camera" list.
It's worth noting that the iPhone 6 Plus already captures 240 fps video although there's plenty of room for improvement. What's more, there's no shortage of smartphones already on the market that can capture 4K video including the Samsung Galaxy S6 / S6 Edge, the Galaxy Note 4, the Oppo R5 and the HTC One M9, just to name a few. Adding support for 4K capture would simply be playing catch-up to the competition.
The latest leak also claims the next iPhone will feature 2GB of RAM which is in line with previous rumors.
Earlier rumblings further suggest the iPhone 6S will integrate the Force Touch feature found on the Apple Watch and ship with a faster LTE chip. We may also see Apple eliminate the physical home button on the front of the phone and switch to an amorphous metal alloy as the primary construction material. Sources claim the smartphone is already in production in preparation for what's likely to be another September launch.
