Say hello to the Advanced In-Cell Touch (AIT) display, LG's next generation LCD HD touchscreen monitor that will be present in future notebooks. LG has announced that the displays have gone into mass production in South Korea and are thinner, lighter and brighter than today's touchscreen notebook monitors. LG will be supplying the new displays to major PC manufacturers across the globe. Initially, the AIT displays will be available for 14 and 15.6-inch notebook screens.
The new AIT display technology works by embedding the touch sensors into the LCD itself. Normally, touchscreens are covered with a layer of touch sensitive glass, but by foregoing the layer with the embedded sensors LG was able to remove the extra layer and reduce in-screen reflection, weight and thickness. The AIT technology is already featured in the LG G4, their flagship Android smartphone that came out in March.
The AIT display improves over current-gen touchscreen notebooks by being nearly 25 percent thinner and 35 percent lighter. But if you're not into touchscreen notebooks, the news isn't that big of a deal. And according to research cited by LG, only 10 percent of the notebook market in 2014 was touchscreen. However, the touchscreen notebook market is predicted to grow to 20 percent within a year.
