4K is poised to be the next big thing in television. Set makers have been pushing the technology for a while now despite the fact that content has been scarce. That's finally changing, however, as streaming providers have been slowly releasing higher-resolution content - a move that's pushing set-top box makers to add 4K capabilities or risk getting left in the dust.

Amazon announced a 4K-enabled Fire TV box a couple of weeks ago and although the new Apple TV doesn't support it, the next-gen Roku (expected any day now) will. Now, we can add another established player to the 4K compatibility list.

TiVo on Wednesday unveiled a new box it's calling the TiVo Bolt. This high-end digital DVR features a much faster processor, more memory and speedier Wi-Fi compared to its predecessor and crucially, can play 4K content.

The Bolt also has some nifty software tricks including a QuickMode that speeds up playback by 30 percent with pitch-corrected audio and a one-button SkipMode to zip past commercials that works on select channels.

In addition to cable content, the Bolt offers access to Netflix, YouTube and Amazon with plans to add support for Hulu in the near future. There are some gaps, however, as services like HBO Now and Sling TV aren't present which as the Journal notes, probably isn't a concern for cable subscribers.

Aesthetically, TiVo's new box strays away from the boring black slab with a white paint job and a unique curve design. It won't appeal to everyone, of course, but it's noteworthy nevertheless.

The TiVo Bolt won't come cheap, starting at $300 for 500GB of internal storage (around 75 hours of HD content) and topping out at $400 for double the space. That includes a free year of service but after that, subscribers will be on the hook for $15 per month, $150 annually or $600 for the life of the device.
