The latest smartphone is Kyocera's rugged DuraForce line, the aptly-named DuraForce Pro, is hiding a versatile secret.
Despite its "Pro" moniker, Kyocera's new device is a decidedly mid-range offering. It features a 5-inch, 1080p impact resistant display that's powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 processor (four cores at 1.5GGHz and four at 1.2GHz), 2GB of RAM and 32GB of local storage (expandable via microSD card slot).
Other notables include 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/r/k Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, Miracast, USB 2.0 connectivity, 4G LTE capabilities, Wi-Fi Direct, a fingerprint sensor, Android Marshmallow and a 3,240mAh non-removable battery with wireless charging support and Quick Charge 2.0 technology. It also carries an IP68 certification for dustproofing and waterproofing (it can withstand being submerged in up to two meters of water for 30 minutes) and Military Standard 810G for "ruggedization."
What really makes the DuraForce Pro stand out from the crowd, however, are its cameras.
In addition to the 13-megapixel rear shooter and 5-megapixel front-facing camera, the DuraForce Pro has a third "Super Wide View" action camera sporting a 135-degree field of view. As a mid-range device, its action camera is limited to 1080p recording (sorry, no 4K here).
No word yet on when exactly Kyocera plans to launch the DuraForce Pro or how much it'll sell for.
