Benchmarks: Total War: Warhammer, DOOM
Total War: Warhammer is a new addition to our benchmark lineup. The game supports both the DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 API though the developer lists DX12 as currently in beta status. We've still decided to show both the DX11 and DX12 performance but please note DX12 support is still a work in progress for this title.
At 1440p we find some interesting results. Looking at the DX11 performance, the GTX 1060 is 27% faster than the RX 480 whereas it was just 2% faster under DX12. Likewise, the GTX 1060 was 39% faster than the R9 390 on DX11 but 4% slower when using DX12. It's also interesting to note that the GTX 1060 is physically slower when using DX12 opposed to DX11 and this is something we've also seen when testing Maxwell and Pascal cards in Ashes of the Singularity.
Since Doom has recently had Vulkan API support patched in we decided to test the game using both the OpenGL and Vulkan APIs. At 1080p using OpenGL, the GTX 1060 is 15% faster than the RX 480, however using Vulkan the GTX 1060 is 15% slower as the GeForce card only gains an extra 4fps whereas the RX 480 enjoys a massive 41fps performance boost!
At 1440p the GTX 1060 trails the RX 480 by a 16% margin when using Vulkan despite being 12% faster using OpenGL. This is an amazing result for AMD while a rather troubling one for Nvidia.
