HELP- 2 X 1GB DDR wont work with my ASUS A7A266-E

I've just bought 2 X 1 GB DDR RAM (PC3200 DDR400) for my ASUS A7A266-E motherboard.

Each RAM chip runs fine by itself in either DDR slot, however when I try
using them both at the same time, no luck. The boot memory test is
blank. I also noticed that when I look in the BIOS settings when I
have both chips in, memory is only recognised as 1MB. When I only
have one chip in, the BIOS setting shows it as 1024MB (which) is
right.

With two chips, boot stops after loading all the PCI devices.

Please help!

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

It is possible, that your mobo doesn`t support two 1gig sticks of pc3200 ram.

Check in your mobo manual, or download the pdf manual from the Asus website.

Hi Howard

The manual states that PC2100/PC1600 DDR is supported.

If the motherboard works with one PC3200 1GB chip, why would it not work with two? What I mean to ask is, wouldn't it be a case of neither or both working?

I don`t know the particulars of your mobo, but as an example. I have an Asrock k7s8x mobo, it has three dimm slots, and supports ram upto pc3200.

My mobo supports upto 3gig of ram, but with pc3200, it will only let me use upto 1gig of ram provided I only put the ram stick into slot one. in other words I can`t run more than 1 stick of pc3200 ram in my mobo.

I`m not saying this is the case with your mobo, but it might be.

Regards Howard :)

1.5GB no problems

You could be onto something - I borrowed a pc3200 512MB dimm and it runs fine alongside one 1GB dimm. 1.5GB is still better than 1GB! :)

Thanks for the feedback Howard
