You manualy change the resolution via the config file (located somewhere in the usere's documents or application data, don't remember which). You can then set it to any resolution including 1280x1024 which it doesn't support out-of-the-box.

One of the requirements for F.E.A.R. is that you have a moniter that can display a 4:3 aspect ratio. Unless he can make his monitor do that, I doub't he will be able to run the game.
