Typically all you have to do is insert the disc that came with your computer and you will be offered the ability to format the disc from their utilities... the same can be said for a retail copy of an OS.

There are a lot of sites out there with this information, try googling 'formating computer'. Anyway, here a good step-by-step site with pictures. Not sure if I can post link yet so just copy and paste it to your browser
