XP only recognises my IDE drive as a slave but now i'm trying to port it to Vista

Hi everyone,

this story is a bit long but please bare with me
I have a seagate 7200.8 250 gig IDE drive which on my xp desktop was only recognised as a slave drive .

It used to be my xp master drive and has got a copy of xp on it. Then a power surge zapped my motherboard and after installing a new Motherboard the only way I could access the drive was to install xp on another drive and use that as the master with my old drive (the one with the problem) running as a slave on the same cable. I should have backed it up then but then my monitor went dead and i couldn't see what i was doing.

I don't have access to the desktop now and only have a laptop. I purchased a ide - usb extenal drive case and vista recognises all my drives except the seagate 7200.8 250 gig. I'm sure there is data on this thing (photos , nested backups of every pc i ever owned until now) has any one got any ideas how i can recover this?

I guess what i really need is a mate with a desktop i could try the slave configuration out on again but currently all i have is the laptop and usb external enclosure. I've considered buying a dual ide to usb enclosure but not sure if that would work given the expense of these things it might be a waste of cash? if you can help please reply

Broken iPod's HDD as External - getting around HPA and custom firmware

In the past, I've found that a broken mp3 player's hard drive can come in handy as an external if you can find an adapter/enclosure to fit it.
Recently, my friend's iPod ended up broken, so I decided to try it with the HDD that was in it.
HDD: toshiba mk8010gah
So here's the issue: I tried erasing/formatting the drive with Windows 7, XP, and OS X.
XP doesn't even list the drive in the disc manager, but still lists it under hardware manager. Windows 7 lists it in hardware manager, but can't format or erase. OS X recognizes it and sees its size/model etc, but can't erase.
I've done a lot of digging, and read that even HDDGURU's Wipe Tool and Atola's HDD Capacity Restore aren't effective. Apparently Apple has put an HPA/DCO on the drive, and then special firmware... and the only way to remove this is with special hardware.
Any ideas or thoughts?
I'd like to find a hard drive firmware repair tool that I can buy online, but it seems most companies only list product info on their sites (no online buying option).

SATA performance on old ASUS mobo

Hi;
I have a system with an ASUS P5AD2-E Premium mobo.
When I first set up the system, I installed two identical 160GB SATA drives on the Intel ICH6R controller.
I set it up for RAID0.

I never had a chance to compare a RAID0 setup with standard SATA (in AHCI mode), so I just assumed that RAID0 was better than standard SATA.

Now, almost 5yrs later, I have decided to replace the two old HDD's with one SATA II 500GB.
It's a Western Digital WD5001AALS. It has a 32MB buffer, compared with the old drives with only 8MB buffer.
All of these drives are 7200RPM.

My first thought was to buy another of the 500GB drives so I could set up another RAID0 system, but after reading about RAID and controllers, I realize that RAID0 on my system is probably not worth the cost of the second HDD, and I don't need another 500GB of storage. Since both the Intel ICH6R and the SIl3114 controllers are on the PCI, not the PCIE bus, the max transfer rate I can get is about 133MB/sec.

When I ran HD Tune for Read, I found some interesting things.

First, when I am running a single SATA II drive (the 500GB) on the Intel controller, it maxes out at about 100MB/Sec.
But as the test progresses, say after the first minute of testing, the rate drops way down, to about 50MB/sec.

When I run the same test on the two old drives configured as RAID0 (on the same controller), the rate is more steady at or near 100MB/Sec, but there are frequent spikes downward to 10MB/sec.

I have found that some of the spikes are due to my running Norton IS 2010 while the test is in progress. Shutting down the IS does reduce the number of downward spikes, but does not eliminate them.

If I try the single SATA drive on the SIl3114, I get read rate of only 70MB/sec, and it also drops off as the test runs.

I understand that there is a burst feature built into the Intel (and probably the SIl) controller, but that is good only for what it says; bursts of data.

What I have concluded is that if I really want great disk transfer rate, I am going to have to replace my mobo to one that has the RAID controller(s) on the PCIE bus.
At the same time, upgrading the mobo would give me the capability of installing a multi-core processor, more RAM, etc.

Am I correct about it being a waste of money to buy another 500GB drive (identical to the one I just installed), and configure it for RAID0 on the Intel ICH6R?

Also, if someone could explain why the transfer rate drops off on the SATA configuration as the test runs.

It's basically a folder on the school network, I can access this folder and view its contents perfectly fine through an internet browser, but when I try to map a network drive to it, it doesn't work, I keep getting errors like this:

New SATA Drive

Verizon Fios router connecting wirelessly to my WGT624 Netgear Wireless Router

I have been trying to find a way to connect, forward the signal, recieve the signal from my Verizon Fios wireless router up to my WGT624 V3 Netgear router.

Is there a way that I can modify my wirless port on my Netgear to recieve a signal wirelessly from my Verizon Wireless router?

My Neighbor did it once with another wireless router, but he can not remember how he did it. I am thinking it had something to do with the Firmware.

If anyone can help me with this that would be great.

I'm basically trying to push the wireless signal from my Verizon router in my basement, up to my wireless Netgear router which is recieving the signal on the main level so that I can plug my wired (non wireless) laptop into the ethernet port which is receiving wireless signal from the Verizon router in the basement in order to gain access to the internet.

Can this be done with the equipment listed above and or some additional firmware and configuration?

Ok, So I'm a gamer, and I game on PC and Xbox 360, problem I'm having is NAT restriction on the 360, pain in the rear. Adds lag to games which gets very annoying, like for example... CODMW2... With NAT open I can get 1.5 kill/death ratio and with NAT on strict its like .7 So, I naturally use DMZ to get past the NAT restrictions, but as soon as I turn on DMZ for the IP my xbox uses, my internet on my laptop and my desktop (both wireless to Router, xbox wired) stop working.

The computers are still connected to the router, and the connection still says that I am connected to "Local and Internet". Now, I can connect to the router (Login to admin pages) but I just cannot go to webpages.

Tech Specs:

Hi there,

I just wanted to ask a few questions to the purpose of satisfying a curiosity I have about computers (lap-tops and home PC).

Are hard drive crashes common? Is there a definite cause? I have heard about desktops crashing, but I never get to know what causes it; so I�d like at least some understanding regarding this, for the effort of avoiding it.

My other �question� was not related with that, but I decided to just attach it. Has anyone else used Ask.com and begin to have the search answers open in a new window? It is a nuisance for me and I just wondered if something could be done.

Cd/dvd problem

DVD player will only read some DVDs and Cd's
not the disks as they work great on many other computers with xp
whats the deal i downloaded drivers from gateway
even installed drive and reinstalled
i don't understand why its doing this.
can anyone give me an idea
I'm sure it's something stupid that I'm overlooking
it won't eve recognize DVD cleaner

Dvd rom wont boot

I'm trying to reformat my computer but, for some odd reason it wont boot from the DVD ROM. I set up the bios to boot for the rom but, it still boots to the hard drive. The Rom is good I tested it on another machine but, wen put into the original machine it doesn't work.

Hello ? Techspot,

4 days ago, I bought "Seagate Barracuda, 500GB, 7200RPM"
I disconnected my old hard drive and place New Hard Drive inside the case and connect to Raid 3 in my P5B Deluxe. Next I re-connected everything and turn on the computer.

A few min of starting, the screen say that I have "Primary IDE Hard Drive Failure" and want me to press "F1" key and I did. I install my windows. After that computer restart as normal, but the screen tell me the same question "Primary IDE Hard Drive Failure" and want me to press "F1" key"

Next it will start windows normaly. Whenever, I turn on the computer, it will ask the same things over and over again.

I want to know what is the best solution.

No Wireless Network found in range

I have been trying hard to solve this problem for a long time. Finally, I gave up and decided to ask for expert's help here.

My problem is I can't connect to my wireless network to surf the internet. It has never happen before and I hope one of you could help me pinpoint the problem.

Dual Velociraptor - Ideal configuration?

In my old Dimension 8300 (BIOS A07) I now have a pair of WD Velociraptor 280gb SATA HDD
Other than having them as C & D drives respectively - can anyone recommend any better configuration arrangement when I install Windows 7 32bt (I am currently running W7 Evaluation)?
I already have an external 1TB for backups/archives etc - my total "in machine" storage requirement is only about 200-240gb (but probably smaller if I did some house-keeping)
My system usage is a bit of Flight Sim (FSX), photoshop, music storage.
Ideas that occur to me are:
a) Raid 0 for ultra fast speed - but can I do that without a Raid Controller card in Windows 7?
b) A contiguous virtual (?) drive that combines both physical HDDs
c) Any other ideas?
Its really a case of I know they're good HDDs but I wonder if if I am doing the best that I could with them?
I would welcome anyones suggestion on what to do (with any detail on the how-to would be welcome too)

Frustrating Windows 7 internet, will not connect

Hi all,

I recently installed windows 7x64, but I've been running into an irritating issue that I find myself unable to solve. Windows will just not get an IP. Once in a while I manage to get an IP address and have it recognize my network, but most of the time I get "Unidentified Network" and the windows default ip of 169.XXX.XXX.XXX. The subnet seems to default to 255.255.0.0 for some reason instead of 255.255.255.0.

- My wireless card is able to connect, my integrated ethernet card works fine in ubuntu, and I cannot connect even when I bypass my router. That means it has to be windows and/or the drivers, correct?

- Is it possible that it has something to do with me unintentionally selecting "Public" network when I first installed the OS, and it being confused ever since? The default icon that shows up when I can't get an IP is a bench, representing a public network, even though I think I have since then changed it to private/home network. The icon changes to that of a home network if I manage to connect.

- I've tried several drivers, but I am incapable of getting them to work.

- Both with and without IPv6

- Setting manually to 100mbps full duplex

- I saw in one forum someone mentioning that the P5NSLI motherboard runs into issues with 4 gigs of ram, something to do with not being able to manage all it's peripherals, although I doubt the validity of that statement.

Verbatim Memory Pen Won't Work! Please Help

Ok so:[LIST][*]There i was [B]doing fine[/B]. having used my Verbatim Store'n'Go for a good year with absolutly NO problems what so ever at my home computer. I'm editing a LARGE video in sony vegas and i just finish the major project. i go to file>render as... and save the file to my memory pen. it is just about to finish... when the [I]*du-dun*[/I] noise is heard meaning [B]my memory pen has come out[/B]. but i look to my right and it is still there like it always has been but [B]the light is out on it[/B]. hhmm.[*]the *di-ding* sound is then heard meaning [B]it has just gone back in [/B]but yet agen i have bot touched it. I open the so called 'saved' video and sure enough windows media player opens but [B]crashes[/B] almost instanly and i'm there for the next 5 minutes trying to close it and i eventually get my computer back to working order. i then notice that it says my memory pen is in but [B]the light is not [/B]on on it. so i take it out and put the pen back in and [B]it says "installing new hardware"[/B] i'm like what?![*]from that moment on that is all it does.[B][U] i plug it in. the *di-*ding* sound is heard. Drive D comes up in computer but when i click on it it says "please insert drive" and the light is not on on the memory pen.[/U][/B]

D-link router won't setup to internet. Cable modem alone works though

Hi all. I got a linksys cable modem which I am on now and a Dlink WBR-210 Router. First problem I have is that I can't get the router to connect to the internet. I plug in everything right, go through the online setup, and after i push the connect button it either freezes, or just goes right back to log in screen.

I also tried this in all browsers (IE,MOZILLA,SAFARI)

Everything was working until my mom did something stupid and reseted the dlink router. I also can't get my linksys modem to connect to xbox live to play cod5 lol, but I could always connect it when I had my router and modem hooked up.

I am running Windows Vista and heres my ipconfig from the computer connected with the cable modem(no router) If anyone needs anything else please ask.

Monitor won't come on after installation of new dvd drive

Good morning. Last night after installing a new/oem SATA dvd drive into my PC, the monitor will no longer come on during boot. Even after unplugging the dvd drive, the monitor will still not come on though i'm getting my normal beeps and processing from the pc itself. Any suggestions?

Odd ping times (4294967277) using tracert command

Now those lines that say '4294967277' load up instantly, but what is with those numbers? just a glitch?

also, (noobish question time) why are there 3 ping times??

Computer internet connection

I have set up my computer with a static IP address of 192.168.2.2 and given my PS3 an IP of 192.168.2.3 because I want the ps3 in a DMZ all the time. I do this so I can connect to friends when trying to play Modern Warfare 2. If the PS3 is not in a DMZ it gives me a Type 3(Strict) NAT so I have connection issues. With the PS3 in the DMZ I get a Type 2 NAT instead. The problem is whenever I enable the DMZ for the PS3's IP address my computer will not connect to the internet. I can't use web pages or skype which is really annoying. I want to leave the PS3 in the DMZ and not have to enable it every time I'm going to play a game.

Problem Accessing my Raid controller hard drive

[B]hey i am havin a problem accessing my 300G harddrive it's "WDC WD32 00JD-60KLB0 SCSI" that is my "storage harddrive" where i got my games an music files on there how do i gain access to that.

it would be a great help if u can help me with a "step-by-step" guide for that so i can do it myself after when you have told me how to do it...

Newbie needs help

Greetings everyone:)
Here's my problem::confused:
I have 2 routers
1) ASUS multifunction router WL-500W (wireless router/Access Point/Gateway/Print server)
2) Billion PiPAC 5200 (ADSL wired modem/router).
I wanted to connect both of the routers together to make wireless internet connection. but to do that I had to make the WL-500W works as an AP (which is possible from it's options).
It did worked, but I lost the wireless printing, and the WL-500W disappeared from the network (no response when I want to open the WL-500W page).
Note from the links above that the WL-500W should do this feature, but I didn't know how to bridge.
Any help would be appreciated.

Bandwidth Restriction on Home Network

Hey everyone,

I am currently running a home network with 3 PCs running through a Linksys BEFSR41(ver. 3) ethernet switch from my PC. What is the easiest way to limit the bandwidth availability to the other two PCs? I have the latest firmware for the router, but it does not support the QoS option of limited bandwidth. All PCs on the network are running Windows XP. Thanks for any help you guys can give. :)

E and D removal disk drives not recognised by PC

As you said I could save virus removal programmes to my desktop and then copy these to my partner's PC to run and install, I downloaded all the virus removal programmes from your 8-steps on to my laptop's Desktop and then successfully burnt these to a RW disk.

The trouble is my partner's PC is so bad that it won't even acknowledge that it has both D and E drives. When you go into My Computer, they are not even listed there, even if I open the drive, put the disk in and close it again. I'm at my wit's end what to do.

Any suggestions on how to get the stupid computer to recognise its own removable disk drives?

Right, I had a wireless router worked ok but dropped signal once a month, which seems to be the norm with routers I buy. The other day the router just stopped working, after searching forums seems that was normal for that type of router, which just sums my luck up, so I spent a bit of time looking into routers and prices to find a good one. I found a router and waited for the sales and got it cheap now I have set it up looks like a good router, just it gives me real low speed and connection right next to the router the speed is 1-2 bar max, on the router it has a speed meter which shows me the speed which the router gives out and that only ever goes up to 2 bar max then drops straight back to 1. I can pick my wireless signal up three houses down the road and it is still 1-2 bar which makes me think I haven�t got it in the wrong position or anything, seems to be working fine just its receiving a very bad signal but, I don�t know where to start my knowledge of these things are very minimal, the router is a belkin N+ F5D8235 V200UK. Another problem I am having on the laptop is I cannot access any sites that require a log in, facebook, hotmail, Halifax, etc. I also can�t access the online technical support which these devices offer, so am pretty stuck.

DVD Drive is not detected either in Windows or in Linux

:confused: I am a CA Student, and I dont know technical aspects of a Computer. Please Help Me to solve this Problem;

[B][U]symptoms[/U][/B]
1. I can open and close this drive by using its switch. (Power Supply is ok)
2. Some times DVD drive will be appeard in "My Computer", But when i try to open the system will be stuck for a minute, and i will stop the operation using "Task Manager", And the Drive will be disapperd from "My Computer".
3. When Dvd drive is displayed on My Computer its properties shall show nothing but an empty storage devise.
4. Yesterday i Selected Optimal Defaults in BIOS assuming that may solve this problem. and in windows i could find that drive, and i could view its properties also. to check i put a video cd in to drive. that cd drive made a big noice of rottating the disk. However i could see the contents of the cd. but when i try to open one folder the sistem became stuck and as usually the dvd drive disappeard from my computer.
5. But when i loaded optimal defaults in BIOS that didnt solve the problem.

I need to install some softwares, and that softwares are in CD. Now i am using my pendrive to install that files. Please HELP ME...:D

Adding a router behind a switch

Hi,
I have recently moved into an apartment which has broadband pre installed. Basically what i want to do is use my router so that i will have wifi throughout the house. I am wondering how i should configure my router.

The plug in the wall is an rj45 so i have an rj11 cable running from that to the dsl input of the router. My laptop sees the router fine but it wont connect to the net. I believe it is a configuration issue with the router (which is an netopia 3347wg).

I am lost tbh, and its quite hard to explain in a post. I can try and explain further if ye dont get me :).

Hard Drive - For Mac and PC

Hi Everyone

I have a Seagate 500GB Free Agent External Hard Drive (similar to this [url]http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/external/freeagent/freeagent_xtreme/[/url])

Now all the files I have on the external hard drive (mainly work files and work related stuff) were all put on using my PC. I now have a Macbook and I'm able to copy the files off the external hard drive onto the macbook but not the other way around (back onto the hard drive after changing the files/updating them).

Can anyone give me a walkthrough as to how to format the external hard drive, so I'm able to copy from and too the hard drive so I'm able to use if from my Macbook?
