For many of us the windows update process is one we allow to run unhindered, and I am by and large content to let it happen providing the process does not intrude into my occasionally frantic workload.
I was a bit surprised to find the PC had suddenly gone snail-like and apps would not respond properly, gradually getting worse until a message telling me I had run out of memory popped up. A quick scrute at the task manager showed that that ghastly program I love to hate called ACT! had grabbed all the memory and was not letting go of it. I restarted and watched the PF usage graph go up a notch every 30 secs or so until it all stopped with a memory shortage message again.
The ACT! program itself had not had an update (it appears they don't do updates if there is a new edition available - that's fine if you have the new OS to go with it but not so hot if not) so I had a shufti at the windows updates history and found an update for SQL server had been applied at the last shutdown. So I restored the thing back to before the update and everything started working as normal - well nearly everything as ACT! now occasionally fails to load the contact database properly.
Moral - don't use ACT! as contact management software and don't assume that just because it comes from Microsoft it is going to work properly!

 Hey everyone, I'm happy to be back on my favourite forums!

Alright this is a tough one. When you click on the start button, you see the following:

http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/1268/001l.png

This is supposed to be a list of most recently opened programs, but due to the fact that I do not use the recently opened programs feature (haven't used it in XP or in Vista) I would prefer to see the following after clicking the start button:

http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/4287/002zu.png

If this would be possible then I wouldn't need to concern myself with the disappearing toolbar problem in Windows 7 and I would just throw all of my program/game shortcuts into this list.

A big THANK YOU in advance to all who invest their time into helping me with this minor annoyance.

But my main question is that i read this article http://www.techspot.com/guides/144-removing-windows7/page2.html and want to follow it.But i am not sure it will merge my c: and d: drive.like i have 20GB in c: and 40 gb in d:.So if i merge them like in article will it be 60GB?What i am trying to do is delete both partiion and merge them so that i can have 60GB in my c: drive.

Do i need to download Gparted to merge drives?Isn't their any way to do with installation xp/win7 disc?

Hello, I was on a friend's computer and when I clicked on various applications such as Paint, an error would pop up stating that the application failed to launch because "msjvofeeqdx.dll" was not found. They are running XP. Upon further use, I realized that other applications not related to the Windows itself were also relying on this missing .dll file and would not run for the same reason. I have searched Google and all sites where one is supposed to be able to find missing .dll files and have came up with nothing. Is there anything I can do in order to avoid reinstalling their Windows? Any help would be very welcome. Thanks.

Hi all,
ok when I turn the laptop on I get the usual black screen for a second, then the window offering to open in recovery console or windows ex media centre appers ( more on this later, this screen was added after I had some problems before). Any I let the computer boot up normally and it goes to a black screen saying something along the lines of "we apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start sussesfully, a recent hardware or software change may have caused this. If your computer stopped responding, restated unexpectedly or was shut down to protect your files choose the last know configureation...."

Now I have 4 options. Safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt or ( last know good configuration) windows start up. Now I have tried all the combination and the results are the same for each. (FYI there is a 30 count down on this screen). So as the next step is for the computer to try to start up again, I get the windows logo page with the blue bar timer thingy, but then it goes through the same steps as above and takes me back to the page with the 4 options! As there is a 30 second timer here the computer is in an iterative loop.

However I can open the computer under "microsoft windows recovery console" when I do the I get taken to a page saying " recovery console provides system repair and recovery functionality"
1: c:\windows
2: d:\minimt
3: f:\windows
which windows installation would you like to log onto?"

This looks as if it the only place that I can work from!!
Any ideas?!? This Problem May have been caused by a virus or the effect of installing and unistalling a web cam on the Laptop. (if that helps)

Ok, back in the days of Windows XP and Vista I used to put a shortcut to one of my harddrives on my Quick Launch bar. Well, 7 doesn't include the Quicklaunch bar...so that's a no go. Of course I can open that drive in Windows Explorer, then pin it to the taskbar...but as soon as I close the window it defaults back to the Libraries folder...not what I want. I figured out that I can Shift + Right-click and that'll let me adjust the properties. Problem is, I like to set the icon to something else, too...and even though I change the icon in the properties, it doesn't stay after I close the properties window, it defaults back to the windows explorer icon:

And that's annoying, I like my icons. The icon only shows on the taskbar when I have the pinned program's properties open. It doesn't show when I open the shortcut, or when it's closed.

So I guess I have 2 questions: Is there any way to get that icon to stick and always display, and/or is there a Quick Launch replacement/alternative in Windows 7?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

I have poked around on this forum and tried to solve my issue (thanks so much to all the folks who post advice here!) but have reached a stuck point and have no clue how to move forward. I'm running Windows XP on a Compaq Presario C307NR Notebook. Here's the issue and the steps I've already taken:

ISSUE: Firefox froze the computer and we restarted. Upon booting, I get the good old error message: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

So, being resourceful, I found Microsoft's page to fix this solution at:
support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

I proceeded to try and do the steps listed there, but once the XP disk loaded, and I tried to select either the Recovery Console or the New install of XP, it said my computer had no hard drives, so it couldn't do anything.

More searching led me to to a post in this forum that suggested disabling the SATA drivers, which I did, and which worked. Now the disk saw my harddrive install, and with relief I saw that my old install (and presumably all of my files) are still there. Just for some reason Windows doesn't know that.

I went back and did the steps at the Microsoft link above. Got through the first copy section, the delete section, and then tried to do the last copy section. That's where I got stuck. For some reason, copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system will not work, because the computer still insists it cannot find the c:\windows\system32\config\system file. Which really confuses me, since I'm pretty sure it did copy in the first step.

What do I do now? I need to be able to get to the files on my drive. Supreme irony for the day is that I just bought an external harddrive, because I knew I needed to backup my files, and was going to do that tonight. Then this happens. Go figure, huh?

If there is a way to simply access the drive and get all my files, then reinstall Windows, I don't mind doing that at all. If there is an easy-ish way to get the computer back to working again without doing that, I'd love to hear it too.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!!

Why this forum closed a post on this (and on the same day as someone posted twice asking for a resolution), is beyond me, ref a google search on sfc will not run, hits on this forum's unanswered and oddly closed 'March 2005' post.

Nevertheless, my Acer AspireOne netbook seems to indicate that Acer was too lazy to correct the registry after they apparently used their corp/tech's pc (obviously equipped with an optical drive 'G' when they installed XP on the Acer AspireOne netbook's hard drives), that conclusion is based on the Acer AspireOne XP Sp3's registry(ies) incorrectly pointing to sfc's pathway as G:\USB-2800\Driver (as opposed to C:\1386).

A simple registry correction resolves what seems to be an OEM 'penny-pinching' issue of refusing to provide Acer users with an XP CD-ROM and seems exacerbated by the OEM tech's laziness and/or ignorance by apparently neglecting to correct the hard drive's registry pathway for sfc.

Assuch, unknowing users are met with the 'insert XP CD now' when trying to run sfc. But there is a resolution that should have been posted here, way back in 2005.

It's simply this. Correct the registry pathway for sfc by...

HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Set
up\SourcePath

..and double clicking that key's "sourcepath" entry, the changing it to wherever the i386 files are stored, eg; in my case it's at "C:\" without the quotes as this seems to be where most OEM's are storing the original XP files.

Some OEM's and/or XP OS's may also require the same change at...

HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Set
up\ServicePackSourcePath

Needless to say, before following this advice, users should always make a system restore point and/or make a complete backup of the registry before fiddling with regedit.

I recommend reading more on how to get sfc to run on XP's at bleepingcomputer dot com - forums - topic - 43051

Im getting an error when I start my computer it searches for PXE-E61 then can't find it then uses a different # and continues on. The process takes place when I first start up my computer and is only there for 2 seconds. I don't experience any real problems but whenever I see something that says "error cable not connected" I get concerned. Recently I got my labtop back from being in hp for a month, they had to replace the whole mother board. I looked up online and it says that if i get that message my laptop shouldn't start up. Anything to worry about/ maybe a way to make it not check for it if it isn't a problem?
