Hi all, when a file is saved to the harddisk is it the file system or operating system that is responsible for saving it to the harddisk. Again, which one is responsible for maintaining files on the harddisk (defrag and scandisk)?.

Many Thanks

I stubbornly used IE7 back when I had Vista, even after IE8 was officially out. Well, I upgraded to Windows 7 recently and now I'm stuck with IE8. But I'm still having a problem that I had back in IE7 on Vista.

When I click to open a new tab (I've got the New Tab page disabled, it just shows the about:blank page), usually what's supposed to happen is the address bar is given focus so the user can just start typing a link. This is what used to happen to me, for the first day or so using IE8 on Windows 7. But now what's happening is the new tab opens, the address bar gets focus for half a second (literally) and then loses it, so I have to manually give it focus. It seems a minor inconvenience...but it's really really annoying. I'm constantly opening new tabs to research some new aspect of whatever project I'm working on and I don't want to have to take the extra few seconds to make sure the address bar has focus. It's more than just giving the address bar focus, I'm so used to it just having it that I open a new tab and just start typing, so I'll open a tab and get through typing a url just to realize that the address bar doesn't have focus, so I have to give it to it, then retype the (potentially very long) url AGAIN!

The ONLY thing I can think that would interfere with the address bar is a toolbar that I have installed, which has a news ticker on it. When I open a new tab I guess the toolbar is reloaded or maybe just that component is reloaded (the news ticker is fed from an XML feed). Further research shows that no, the news ticker seems to have nothing to do with it. I disabled it in my toolbar installation and I still get no focus. I went all out and straight disabled the toolbar and BAM, I get focus again.

So here's my problem, I want to continue using my toolbar, I like my toolbar. I also want to be able to keep the ability to have my address bar be focused when I open a new tab. It's a Conduit toolbar...so...does anyone have any suggestions?

And just so you all know, sometimes it works properly, it's not always broken.

Hi guys,

I'm new to the forums but have been subscribed to the RSS feed for a while. Apologies for creating a thread as my first post, but I deemed this the best place to ask this question.

I recently bought a laptop with a built-in webcam (MSI GX620 for the curious ones). It initially came with Windows Vista, but I quickly formatted and installed Windows 7. Unfortunately, Windows Vista came with a decent webcam software called CrazyTalk - it allowed capture and video recording, as well as editing and image warping - a la Mac's Photo Booth app.

Now I have no good software to utilize my webcam. Does anyone know of any decent open-source webcam capture/record software?

Thanking you in advance for your help,
Aaron, Ireland.

Windows Movie Maker is not included in Win7, however it can be easily imported from Vista to Win7.

Microsoft offer Windows Live Movie Maker as a substitute, but it cannot edit audio files whereas the Vista version can.

Open Vista Program files and copy the folder entitled: "Movie Maker". Paste the folder intact into Win7 Program files.

Create a shortcut to desktop by opening the "Movie Maker" folder & right clicking the file "MOVIEMK". Click: "Send to desktop as shortcut".

If desired, the shortcut on the desktop can be copied and pasted into the "Start Menu" which is found using the following:

1. Open any folder. In top taskbar click: Tools \ Folder Option \ View Tab \ Dot: "Show hidden files, folders & drives".

2. Open Win7 C:\ Program Data \ Microsoft \ Windows \ Start Menu \ Programs

Simply paste the desktop shortcut into the programs folder, and reset folder view to normal.

I recently placed a post in the Video Cards section, as I at first believed my problem to be related to my 4870, but now I know differently. I've looked for a delete button on my thread, and can't seem to find it. Apologies if this has caused a problem! I wasn't sure whether to amend the last one or start this one. I'll mark the other one as needing deletion.

I've been suffering random crashes, which manifest themselves as a frozen screen in-game or on Youtube and sometimes just cursor loss. Tabbing back to my desktop shows a black screen with various menus and opening and closing and my toolbar is placed on the top of my screen. I cannot do anything at this point, including trying to ctrl, alt + del so I have to press the refresh button.

Knowing the 4800 series to be buggy, I blamed it on my card, but today I suffered another crash but was fortunate enough to make out an error message: 'dwm.exe application error'. I've had a search and as far as I can see dwm is responsible for the Vista graphics. I've not been able to get any further than that as it seems to be a fairly rare problem, except I did come across a dodgy offer of a downloadable program that can fix my registry.

I'm confused at this point. This is a new PC and I know it's come with a restore disk, but I don't know whether that can just repair a faulty registry? I've tried contacting the makers of my PC and their online messaging system appears to be down. Is there a registry repair tool out there that's trustworthy and would it work?

To be honest, I'm scared I've been stuck with a rather expensive lemon and really not sure what to do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

My name is ascott373, and I'm having a problem accessing my homework on EXCEL 2003. I'm getting an error message that 'SKU011.CAB cannot be found'. I believe my issue started when I downloaded EXCEL 2007 when I was told to upgrade my EXCEL to 2007.

So it appears that when I downloaded the EXCEL 2007, it blanket my everything that I've done on EXCEL 2003. I went to: control-panel/add & remove programs/ Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003, then pressed 'change' and followed the instructions to repair and reinstall.

I got the same error message: 'SKU011.CAB cannot be found'. I don't have a CD to reinstall 'SKU011.CAB because my laptop computer came preconfigured my school that I graduated from 8 months ago.

I need help ASAP!

I got the copy as an OEM when I built a different system and never used it. I decided to try it here just for the heck of it.

It is used for 3 things - As a SageTV client (so there are NO video files stored locally on the c: drive), as a Media Portal client (again, NO video files created or stored locally) and UB Funkeys for my son (not a big app by any means).

As far as utilities go, I have a couple - O&O Defrag, Catalyst Control Center, Norton Ghost, and CPUZ. That's about literally it. Nothing else.

I've enabled the ability to see hidden AND system files. The pagefile is on the second drive and there are no leftover ones on the main drive. Hyberfil accounts for maybe 3GB of the total. I did a cleanup and got rid of Windows.old.

Is this a case of supply creating its own demand? In other words, if I installed this on a 30GB SSD, would it only take up 10-15GB or so? I've heard that's what a clean install of Vista Ultimate takes.

Is Ultimate just grabbing a ton of space for restore points and shadows and such because it can?

This just seems ridiculous to me that I have to spend an hour letting my drive Ghost itself if I want a backup. the c: drive is a SATA II 500GB WD drive.

Is this normal? Is something lurking on the c: drive I can't find but is being backed up anyway?

I'd like to get a 60GB SSD but am honestly afraid to when I see this going on.

How would Vista Ultimate install in that case?

Could I go down to 30GB?

Thanks for any help.

How can I extract that single file without having to wait the skip of the rest of the files?

Or maybe is there an alternative program to winrar which does this?
Thanks in advance.

Hi;
I have a home network with 3 computers. I am connected to the Internet over Optimum Online (Cablevision) cable modem, and have my own router(s) to distribute the network throughout the house.

I am looking into the possibility of increasing Internet security by installing a "smarter" router between the cable modem and the rest of the network.
I would like this router to handle Internet filtering, to prevent anyone from going onto sites that will cause harm to the computer, as well as parental controls for my 12 year old niece.

I could run a proxy server, and I already own a license for Win 2K server I could set up on another machine and use it as the proxy, but I think that purchasing a new router would be a lot less expensive and more efficient.

My current router(s), D-Link DI-724U and DI-624 will perform very rudimentary Internet filtering and parental control, but this is neither sufficient or convenient.

I also will have Internet security installed on all PC's to handle virus, malware, etc, but I am having so much trouble with seemingly legitimate web sites downloading spyware, and other non-invited software.
I can set my Internet software for tighter controls, but it is difficult to do this with three PC's, and would like to block certain sites from all computers at once.

Can anyone suggest a router that would handle this requirement?

Thanks

I've seen high-speed videos shot with multi-thousand fps cameras, and the ones that have sound have slow motion sound. I want to know how to film this slow motion sound. For a good example of exactly what I mean, watch mythbusters, they do slow motion footage with sound all the time.

I've tried just recording a regular sound and stretching it in a program like Vegas, but then it gets all distorted and...idk how to explain how it gets, here's an example:

Normal:
http://infectionist.com/misc/odst_egg-hitchhikers.mp3

Stretched (x2):
http://infectionist.com/misc/odst_egg-hitchhikers_stretch.mp3

Notice the echo? That happens, and that's only when I stretch it to x2, high-speed cameras film at many many times normal NTSC framerates. Does anyone know a way I can record at higher...framerates? I'm not sure if that's what you would call it when referring to audio, but you should know what I mean.

Hi. (I searched for "java" and did not find many threads specifically discussing it.)

I updated Java yesterday and was extremely irritated to have (a) startup entries re-activated after I had disabled them previously, and (b) an updated FF plugin for Java but the previous plugin was not removed and is still there, so I assume there could be conflicts?

Anyway, I guess I'm just pissed off that this software is "pulling a Quicktime" from 10 years ago, i.e., completely ignoring my current settings during the update process and resetting all the options to what the software maker wants them to be, rather than respecting my settings.

So I am curious - how important is Java, and would the world end if I uninstalled it completely? From what I have read, it helps display applets on websites mostly, and who needs that really? I'm not a 'gamer,' so I don't need it for that either. I've also read that it is a major security risk, and I update it because I have been told I need to do so regularly to prevent infections.

So if this software is (a) a big backdoor into my system that can be exploited, (b) a resource hog that slows everything down when running, and (c) is mostly designed to make web sites do things I really don't want them to do anyway, is it really a critical software to use?? I understand that websites that I like, like sports scoreboards that update automatically, may not work. But I'm starting to wonder whether that extra functionality is really worth the risk/hassle.

Does Java provide any functionality that is critical to system function or security, or is it merely a bell/whistle that 'enhances' browsing? If it is the latter, then I might try disabling it completely for a while to see whether I notice much difference. BUT, if disabling it opens a backdoor security-wise, I definitely don't want to do that. So I await the advice of wiser people than myself...

I'm leery of any software that overwrites user settings, and I wonder if a mass "disable-Java" campaign starting on sites like TS might be a way to get their attention? If enough people disabled it, web sites would have to start using alternatives or risk losing traffic, which would in turn force the Java people to improve their product and stop overriding user settings.

Thanks for your advice/opinion. :)
