BSOD during intensive CPU usage

Hello,

I have recently started experiencing BSOD when using my processor intensively - most of the time whilst playing Warcraft.


• Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
• NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT (ASUS)
• Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.40GHz
• ASUS P4R800-VM motherboard
• 1024 MB - Corsair TWINX memory
• Maxtor 6Y160P0
• SONY DVD RW DW-U18A
• SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio

The memory and video card are recent additions.

Everything was fine after the installation of the new video card and memory but then I started getting random BSOD. I ran memtest and determined that one of the memory sticks was faulty. I ordered and was sent a replacement set. These were installed and tested. Memtest completed one full pass with no errors but would then freeze half way through the next pass.

I have monitored my CPU temp when running hot and it gets to about 62 degrees cent and then stays there.

OK - now I feel silly.

I noticed when I was installing new components that there was a large amount of dust covering the fan and the heatsink of the CPU.

After spending £7 on a can of spray air and using it I have now noticed that the temp of the CPU does not go above 42 degrees cent.

I have since run memtest and had to stop it after running continous for over 3 hours and completing 8 passes of the memory with no errors.

Looks like it was a case of the CPU running too hot.

Oh Dear.

Looks like I will need some help after all !!

Since cleaning the heatsink I have the computer BSOD twice so there must still be a problem somewhere - although it isnt't crashing as often.

Is anybody able to diagnose what could be going wrong from the above info.

My memory would appear to be fine as memtest will now happily run passes with no errors until I stop it.

Could I have damaged my processor? Like I mentioned earlier the only additions to the system is memory (Corsair Pro) and the 6800 GT.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Some faulty ram can pass faulty ram. Zip 4 to 5 minidumps and attach zip files here. I will examine your minidump. I hope I can find out the culprit.

Thanks for the help.

I have attached my last 4 minidumps, zipped as requested.

With reference to the memory I have exchanged what I thought was my faulty sticks for new ones.

The problem seems to have got slightly better since I cleaned my processor heatsink - it now runs 20 C cooler, but I still get the odd BSOD which these minidumps reflect.

Hopefully you can shed some light on what is going on.

HI Scott,

I'm sorry for late reply as many requests to read the minidumps. It is faulty ram.

Suggestion
1. Reseat memory stick to another memory slot
2. If it still fails, replace the ram if you have only one memory stick
3, If you have two memory sticks, diagnostic which memory stick is bad,

Thanks for your help on this problem. I have now solved the problem and hopefully my solution will help others.

My motherboard is an ASUS P4R800-VM. Reading the manual it states that this board supports SINGLE-SIDED modules in dual channel mode.

The corsair memory I had purchased was double sided. (Tx Pro 3200 C2).

When I installed the memory in slots A1 and B1 the BIOS reported 1GB memory running at 333MHz in dual channel mode. Again it is a limitation of the board acknowledged by ASUS that causes the memory to drop to 333Mhz.

Now this memory has got 2 strips of LED's on the top that show utilisation of the chips on each side of the module. One thing I noticed was that the module in slot A1 had both strips of LED's lit up whereas the module in slot B1
only had one of the strips lighting up. This would indicate that the motherboard was not using the last side of the last module.....

My guess is that when a call was made to use this chunk of the memory (750MB - 1Gb area) was when I suffered a blue screen.

Anyway took out the 2nd module and tested for 2 hours - rock solid. Then I put the 2nd module into slot A2 so that I had a module in each channel as opposed 2 in one channel (hope this makes sense). Anyway the result is that the BIOS reports 1Gb memory at 333Mhz in single channel mode.

More importantly all LED lights are now lit on all strips!!!

Even more importantly after a good testing my system is now back to rock solid.

Once again thanks for your help and hopefully the above will help someone else at some point.
