Mandrake 8.2 Beta 2

Anyone given this a whirl?? I've downloaded the .iso files and am going to try an upgrade. Apparently a great deal of good, new technology in there.

If you want to download the ISOs as well, here is a list of ftp mirror sites for download - pick the one nearest to you:

I got both of the CDs from the UK mirror site in about 2 hours or so. Just use Nero or whatever to burn the ISOs to CDs.

I am going to give this a try, and will post back anything I find out.

Running 8.1 so far, I don't see the need to upgrade. What's new in the 8.2 ?

Wait till I install it (soon) and hopefully I will be able to tell you.

No ship that small has a clocking device...

An upgrade from 8.1 hasn't gone well.

There are problems with several services crashing, and the environment variables were not set up properly under anything other than my root account; had probs starting X until I editing some config files.

All my OS are drive imaged anyway, so its never anything to worry about for me trying these things.

Will try a clean installation I believe.

It's not the first time I hear Mandrake upgrade to fail. Clean install is the best thing to do with almost every OS, anyway.

Don't be so surprised, your highness....

A clean install has worked wonders.

However, the squid and pro-ftp services crash during startup. I finally gave up on trying to make them work, and just disabled them with ntsysv.

Still looking at this OS (posting from it now, in fact.)

Mandrake 8.1

I have Mandrake 8.1, Win XP (got for Xmas), and Win98 for all my old peripherals that haven't got to work in Linux or XP. I think Mandrake 8.1 is solid and efficient especially for Linux newbies like me.

Alright, Ive got a problem with Mandrake

Computer works fine with Redhat. But when using Mandrake, I'm having a problem with the mouse. For example, when I start the computer and X starts, the mouse doesn't work. I then log off of X and back in, and the mouse will work....

Which mouse? Did you choose it correctly when installing Mandrake?

I'm not sure what the mouse is ... came with a compaq presario 5400us.

When doing the install, it did not auto detect the mouse. Using keyboard, I navigated to the mouse selection screen and then chose a generic ps/2 mouse. The next screen, letting you test your choice, worked fine and the mouse worked for the rest of the install.
