I wanted to check for windows updates, but i can't get my IE to connect to the internet. I have both firefox & chrome (which both connect). I tried defaulting all settings & even starting it with no ad-ons.

any ideas?

Sounds like IE is corrupt and since that is apart of the OS, you could download IE 7 or 8 to fix the problem. If you're using IE 6 or 7 then go to 8.
