Hi guys,

Last night I clicked a link by accident from ESPN which led to another site. I was trying to close that ad but clicked on another link which popped up a fake virus scan saying I had malware. I opened the task manager and ended explorer and didn't click anything but immediately after my task manager was showing programs running in *32.

For instance, when I opened internet explorer, it showed iexplore.exe *32. There were 6-8 programs running in *32 so I immediately went to safe mode to investigate.

Is this something to be concerned about? I ran MalwareBytes and Windows Defender in safe mode last night and everything came up clean. I am using Window's 7 if that helps at all.

Right now I am not in front of my comptuer but can access it tonight to update the post with whatever else is needed. Thanks so much in advance for your help.

I'm new so I am sorry if I am forgetting to post anything to help you guys assist me.. please let me know what this *32 means or if you need me to run anything to show a log. I can do all of this tonight as soon as I'm home from work. Thank you so much.

EDIT: Whoops didn't edit the first post I hit reply by accident. Off to a bad start , sorry guys.

Do mean the process for Internet Explorer displayed like this> iexplore.exe*32> exactly like that?
Because * usually stands for a Wild Card and I want to clarify if you see that or added it.

It is common to have multiple iexplore.ese processes running with IE8, so you need to explain the *32.

Thank you so much for your reply. I appreciate the help.

I will have the exact wording once I get home so I can provide all the file names from the task manager but yes it was iexplore.exe*32

It had the * and 32 following it, which I have never seen before. I ran Windows Defender and MalwareBytes in Safe mode and it didn't find anything but I'm pretty sure something is wrong.

Don't know if this helps at all but the site that popped up said "Malware detected" and then a fake virus scan immediately begun to activate through internet explorer. I cntrl alt deleted internet explorer then the *32 showed up. I doubt it is a coincidence.

Yes, I just got home and checked. The process is called iexplore.exe *32 There are two of them running on my processes (I am in safe mode with networking) - one is at 31,136k and the other is at 5,000k. I only have this webpage open.

What should I do next ? Thanks a lot for your help

I just ran Malwarebyes again. Going to run search and destroy and AVG too.
This is what my Malwarebytes scan finds, but the iexplorer.exe *32 is still showing:

is this Advanced Registry Optimizer 2010 app any good
I do not recommend a Registry Cleaner to anyone. Most of us don't.

Thanks a lot for the response. I will go follow the steps right now and paste the results.

I had that registry cleaner and it picked up 939 registry errors, some were actually true, others I had no idea so I just x'ed out.

For some reason when I tried to reply before it said I needed admin approval, lol. Before I post, I want to thank you for taking the time to help me.

I followed the 8 step instructions. Here are the results for MalwareByte's quick scan:

==== End Of File ===========================

I have Windows 7 64-bit (I think I do anyway) so I didn't d/l GMER as instructed. Please let me know if I am missing anything or if you require any additional information. Once again, thank you so much for taking your time to do this.

Also, if there are programs I could delete which would make my computer run faster, please let me know.. I didn't realize I had so many. Thanks so much!

Glad to help. As for 'downsizing' the Start menu, that will come later. I have help for the many preloaded VAIO processes that I will share with you to determine if you need them running.. This system comes heavily preloaded and it has been my experience that most don't use the processes and aren't even aware of them running!

PleaseRun Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus scan HEREhttp://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
  1. Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  2. Click Start
  3. When asked, allow the Active X control to install
  4. Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notification Tray icon near the clock.
  5. Click Start
  6. Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  7. Click Scan
  8. Wait for the scan to finish
  9. Re-enable your Antivirus software.
  10. A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.

Great, that sounds awesome, thank you very much.

I have turned off Defender and followed the steps. It also said Norton was activated but the subscription has expired as I don't like Norton (Should I uninstall this possibly later?).

I'm trying to locate the results for the ESET scan, for some reason I found another log.. called lv.log. I'm not sure what that scan is from.. any idea? Will post once I find, any other folder that it would be in?

This is the only log I find in the ESET folder..

ESETSmartInstaller@High as CAB hook log:
OnlineScanner64.ocx - registred OK
OnlineScanner.ocx - registred OK

The scan finished and said clean though but for some reason the log.txt isn't here.. I'm looking here: C:\Program Files (x86)\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt

Even searched all my folders with no luck.. any idea?

I searched again this morning for the log.txt, I searched all folders and only found the log that I posted above. No idea where it could of went. Any idea Bobbye? Thanks.

Please run the Eset scan again and be sure to save the log at the end.

You should also uninstall Norton now. There are processes loading and running from it. This tool should help: Norton Removal Tool

Nothing prompts me to save the log file at the end, it says scan complete and then asks me if I want to purchase ESET. Am I missing a step at the end? Please let me know. I will run the scan again as soon as I am home.

I will remove Norton tonight, thank you very much for the link.

BTW- I also have uninstalled Norton, thanks. Should I keep AVG, Spybot Search and Destroy and that Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program? Thanks in advance.. still unable to find that log though from ESET tho..

Found it!!!

I searched everything ... or so I thought. I did a search in the entire C drive for "ESET" and it finally found the log.

Here are the results:

Is this the log Bobbye? Do you see anything wrong? I have not run any of my other virus scans as instructed and have been disconnecting from the internet when I don't need it as much as possible just as a precaution.

That's the log and it's clean. I had script for removals for you but forgot you had a 64 bit system. Please run this:
  • Download OTL
  • Double click the OTL icon to run it.
    OTL_Icon.gif
  • Set Output at the top to Minimal Output.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Copy the entries in the Code box below> Paste in the Custom Scan box.
    Code:
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll
    sceclt.dll
    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll
    iaStor.sys
    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys
    vaxscsi.sys
    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys
    nvgts.sys
    iastorv.sys
    ViPrt.sys
    eNetHook.dll
    ahcix86.sys
    KR10N.sys
    nvstor32.sys
    ahcix86s.sys
    nvrd32.sys
    symmpi.sys
    adp3132.sys
    mv61xx.sys
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan won't take long.
Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTListIt.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.

Thanks for the reply. That is good news. Any idea why my computer is running those programs as *32 though? I don't know if it is just me or what but I feel like after I downloaded Spybot Search and Destroy my computer runs slower, lol. Should I uninstall the programs I downloaded like TFC, ESET, (or the virus scans AVG, Spybot, etc that I have?) etc? Thanks in advance.

Here are the log results:
