A short howto :)

First, choose your nick in mIRC.
The log on to the server.

When you've logged on type the following:
/msg nickserv register <insert email here> <insert password here>
then push enter

You will then be sent an email with a confirmation code (just copy paste) and you can start using the channel... (You'll get a confirmation after you've sent the activation code)

So let's say I'd wanted to register the nick totalnewbie: I'd set it as the nick in mIRC (or whatever IRC client you want to use), and log on...

Then I'd type:
/msg nickserv register totalnewbie kill_loosers@hotmail.com newbiesunite

I'll then get a message telling me an activation code has been sent.
Checking my hotmail account I'll find something like:
/msg NickServ ACTIVATE 1235978314
which i copy into mIRC...
I'll then receive a message saying my account has been activated and what password I'd chosen...

NOTE: Sometimes the services can be down, which means that you won't be able to register... If it happens, wait an hour and try again..

Hope this helps

I meant TOTAL NEWBIE to IRC, I don't know anything. I dont' know anything thats not GUI based other than BASIC, some FORTRAN, and some C++. I got myself registered with StarChat and thats about it. I don't know anything past there, I don't know how to join channels, basically I don't know anything. I'm stuck here. I'm sure it can't be that complex but I get really frusterated when somethign that other people find so simple and I can't figure out.

Sorry for not replying

I leave my computer on even when I leave the house to go to work, that's why I didn't reply when you guys talked on the channel. Sorry

Oh, and for a more convenient way you can use the "channels" folder...

To do that either click on the "Channels" button (should look something like the folder button in widows), or wait for it to pop up after you connect...

There, type in the name of the channel (#3dspotlight) and push the add button... That's it... When you want to join, just highlight the channel and click "join"

Note, it might be a good idea to remove most of the channels currently in the "channels" folder... (highlight and delete)

Now is there anything wrong with that??

I will always be idling in there, as I have class and sleep and stuff, but will leave IRC running. I will get back to you when I see it, so if I don't respond, be patient

I'm not sure, but I just leave it running all day long, if it is a big deal, please let me know, and I will disconnect. Unless of course I will be at my comp using it

exactly my opinion. We could setup a paypal account or something and we could donate money IF NEEDED to set one up...

Err... What are you talking about? paying?! for what?!?

If it's a chatroom you're thinking about IRC is free and have allways been free...
The difference is which net we're using, in regard to who'll visit, and how often channeltakeovers and server downtime occurs...
On a server with the services starchat has, takeovers are not as usual as on others, but services do go down (either by accident, or someone taking it down) which means we won't be able to log on to the channel (or perhaps even the server) and could end up without the channel for a while...

If the latter part of the post confuses you, just ignore it... Either you can join the channel or not

For those of us that idle in there all day long, and wonder what time things happened. All you have to do it type /timestamp in any channel. That will enable the timestamp so you can see how long it was since you missed someone. Just a little helpful hint. And Rick if you can post how you get your name highlited when you are away and stuff I would like to know, that would also be helpful.
