Seeking good book for writing Windoze programs

Can someone recommend a good reference or "how-to" book about writing programs to run on Windoze operating systems?

I'm a former programmer, experienced with a bunch of languages, so whatI need is not so much an introductory programming book, as one that will be a good book to turn to for basic info on writing programs for Windoze, that will tell me macros and services available, and so on. Tnx.

You could start by telling WHAT language(s) you want to program in, and what TYPE of programs you want to write.

What language to program in

If I'm gonna learn a language, it may as well be one that's powerful and widely used.

I've written a few PHP programs, but I want something that will be web-independent.
