sony dvd burner crash

whilst burning a disc i got an error over disc failed.
i could'nt remove the disc so i shutdown and manually ejected the disc.
now on bootup the drive just has the light flashing permanently, i cant open it or the pc doesn't even recognize it.
i've tried disconnecting it and re-connecting it to see if the pc will see it.
but no joy.
i put it in my backup pc and found that it was recognized,(as dru-510a boot drive) but still has the flashing light and i am unable to open it or get anything out of it.
am i going to have to throw it away, at this stage it seems so.

System specs
Before you throw it away, look for some obvious damage.

Check the power and data connectors for broken/bent pins. Open the thing up and look for debris, broken gears, dislodged rails, excessive dust etc.
