Tips for Ubuntu new install

Bill Gates finally ticked me off for the last time. I got a Ubuntu 5.04 disk and am going to put it on the 2nd system in my profile, and try it out before putting it on system # 1. After reading about problems with Linux installs, it's got me scared to death. I've gotten pretty good with Windows but never messed with Linux.
Any words of wisdom before I jump off the deep end?

First word of advice - use Ubuntu 5.10
Next important thing is to know what you do with your machines? An Ubuntu installation (I've only done 1) is painless - walked me through the whole thing and so far it's probably my favorite distro simply due to ease of use. However, if you're a hardcore gamer then don't even think of straying from MS.
