Cannot start up Sony VAIO laptop

I must have deleted a crucial file, if I try to start up,I get 'no operating system found'.Cannot get into safe mode to do virus check or systems restore..Put in restore disc, started to restore then said no hard disc found!? Any ideas?

It could be a loose power or data cable to your hard drive. Make sure they're tight. It also could be a failed hard drive, or corrupted hard drive.

Did you ever try to do a Repair of XP? Have a look at the top of the Windows Forum for a Sticky thread with details.
