Unpredictable video quality

I have a problem where sometimes videos play in lower pixel, higher contrast on my PC no matter what the programme, Windows Media Player, DivX Player or Winamp, but sometimes in a darker contrast, better quality for reasons I can't figure out, and not as a result of me changing any settings, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you talking about different videos or the same one playing in different quality at different times? If different videos, maybe its the quality of the video itself????
