I have been trying to install Linux Redhat 7.2 onto my computer, which has the Abit Kr7a-raid motherboard and when i put in the cd to install it says 'Attempt to kill init' and restarts the computer. I have been able to get it to install on another computer, but i want it to work on this computer. What should i do??

Yeah, I'm sure those newer ATA controllers aren't supported by the
older kernel (2.4.7) in RedHat 7.2. Specifically:

Southbridge Off-chipset ATA [-RAID]
KR7A[-RAID] ViA VT8233 HighPoint HPT372
KR7A-133[-RAID] ViA VT8233A HighPoint HPT372

All but the VT8233 support UltraATA/133 (the VT8233 is
UltraATA/100), which isn't a trival ATA change from UltraATA/100.
Do you have a KR7A-RAID, or a KR7A-133-RAID? If it is the former, I
thought the VT8233 was supported by RedHat 7.2/kernel 2.4.7.

I'll check my newer kernels for VT8233/A/HPT372 support. I'm sure
they're in some of the newer ones.

Get with me sometime about loading an updated RedHat distro, with an
updated kernel. I have a network-based install on my notebook, with
a "late" RedHat Rawhide kernel. I just need to update the installer
with the newer kernel (not trival, but not difficult).

I just checked and the VT8233 _is_ fully supported in kernel 2.4.7
(at least the RedHat 7.2 kernel version).

So either it is a VT8233"A", which is on the KR7A-133[-RAID], or its
some variant with a vendor/id string that is not like the original.

Since the VT8233A chip is pin-compatible with the VT8233, Abit may
be using the newer chip on the older KR7A[-RAID] boards. Such is
common when an older IC is no longer available.

P.S. I hope you know there is no official "RAID" support (which
really isn't RAID, it's a "BIOS trick" and still uses your main CPU)
support on those HighPoint chipsets in Linux. There are a few
binary-only/kernel-specific ones, but I wouldn't trust them. I'd
use software RAID in the Linux kernel instead (faster and more
reliable).

I take it you have your drive plugged into the onboard RAID?? Please post details information about your hard disk configuration....

I remember a friend with an ASUS raid board having problems with 7.1 and when we got 7.2 the problems vanished.... It may well be when 7.3 is released all will be well....

Unless I can find something better to go on, you might either have to wait or do some pretty extensive mucking around, which might involve installing just connected to regular IDE, recompiling the kernel with a later version and then swapping back.....

I am still looking....

ok, sounds good, i have some questions though. Im working on another computer with my old 15 inch monitor and i setup the settings when i installed linux for it to be 1024x768. How do i change it now within linux??

Shut X Windows down so that you are just in the command line.

As root, run this:

Xconfigurator

Pick your monitor, etc, graphics card. The final stage is the resolution.
