Hello and welcome to Techspot.
1 minidump crashes at win32k.sys. This is the Windows Multi-User Win32 Driver. It references excel.exe as the owning process and has a bugcheck of 50. 2 minidumps crash at ntkrnlmp.exe. This is the Windows nt & kernel file. They have bugchecks of 50 and 7F. One references hphmon05.exe as the owning process. This is the Hewlett Packard Card Reader. 0x00000050: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA Requested data was not in memory. An invalid system memory address was referenced. Defective memory (including main memory, L2 RAM cache, video RAM) or incompatible software (including remote control and antivirus software) might cause this Stop message, as may other hardware problems (e.g., incorrect SCSI termination or a flawed PCI card). 0x0000007F: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP One of three types of problems occurred in kernel-mode: (1) Hardware failures. (2) Software problems. (3) A bound trap (i.e., a condition that the kernel is not allowed to have or intercept). Hardware failures are the most common cause (many dozen KB articles exist for this error referencing specific hardware failures) and, of these, memory hardware failures are the most common. Your bugcheck codes, indicate you may have a ram problem. Go HERE and follow the instructions for testing you ram/page file/hard drive etc. Regards Howard

Thanks Howard, first of all sorry to respond after so many days, but was reinstalling the entire system (as recommended by HP)
I have done the following 1. Ran memtest, it showed errors (some red lines in the output) on the 8th pass. 2. Based on the response from HP, I have also reinstalled XP. 3. Ran the HDD test (long), no issues reported. 4. Laptop battery still gives problem (as soon as I put the battery, the machine crashes and does not boot). 5. Also updated BIOS version to F.45 At times, my machine still crashes, could you also analyze the fresh mini-dumps and tell me if RAM has any problems. I have HP laptop, hynix 512MB DDR ram. Secondly, for the mrtRate file not found, I found some information on the net, that it is related to Quicken software, I uninstalled this software, so I guess I should no longer see that error. Request you to pls analyse the fresh mini-dump and advise. Currently, I see the following errors in event viewer Event Type: Error Event Source: System Error Event Category: (102) Event ID: 1003 Date: 5/13/2006 Time: 4:27:12 PM User: N/A Description: Error code 1000008e, parameter1 c000001d, parameter2 00000007, parameter3 f780ca40, parameter4 00000000. Your latest minidumps are consistant with a ram problem and crash with various bugchecks 50/D1/8E/1A.
If Memtest gives you errors, it`s reasonably safe to assume that your ram is the culprit. Regards Howard

Hi Howard,
I did lot of analysis over the past few weeks and here is what I found. 1. Did complete testing on RAM sticks in each slot. Both RAM Sticks work fine. 2. Did low level formatting of HDD; as well purchased new HDD. 3. Installed recommended updates from HP. 4. Got laptop verified with HP technicians. I feel the RAM sticks are fine, now and I do not see the error frequently. But after I get BSOD (0xFE, D1, 8E, 7f) the laptop won't start and stucks on the black screen. However after 10-20 mins, it works fine. Any ideas on what could be the problem? BTW, these errors of black screen and BSOD just before it, are not getting reported in event viewer. Is it anything to do with BIOS version (I have the latest F.45 bios version of HP)? Any help is appreciated. |

How did you discover these things from the dump? Do you need Visual Studio?

I have the same issues with another HP laptop (nx8220), the problem for me however isn't the RAM, but the PCI-bus on the mobo. For some reason it gives up the ghost from time to time, the only solution for me is to change the mobo. I'm quite lucky though since the laptop in question belongs to my work, so they are the ones that has to take the charges for this.
Maybe HP should look into this problem??? |
