problem = after windows xp start-up loading screen, black screen comes up, mouse arrow briefly shows up, windows hangs. monitor goes to stand-by. optical mouse light is sometimes on. try ctrl alt del, nothing works. try windows key and U twice, to shut it down. also does not work. computer is pretty much not responding. press reset button and computer beeps then floppy disk light goes on. press power button and it shuts down.

occurs after restarting when installing nvidia windows xp drivers OR sp2 update.

no problems in safe mode when problem has not been rolledback.

system restore before drivers installed also works.

Pentium IV 2.0 ghz
Windows Xp sp1 [recent reformat due to this problem]
Gigabyte GA-PE667 motherboard
Nvidia Geforce 440 mmx card
brand new 350 W PSU
256 mb RAM (one single wafer, already tried changing slots)

Anyone know what's wrong or an alternate graphics driver i can download for the meantime? Right now i'm using the standard VGA and its super slow. Please help me out, i'm desperate. THANKS.

Before installing the driver try turning off the service "Background Intelligence Transfer".
