Are Dell laptop hard drives proprietary?
Hi, I have a dell inspiron 6000 laptop, with an 80 gig hard drive. I need a replacement but dell is out of the hard drive I need. Does anyone know if they are proprietary? Can I buy a hard drive from anywhere or do I have to stick with dell??
Thanks for your help. |

generally no. I have never heard to dell hard drives being proprietary, however RAM and power supplies usually are.

No they are not proprietary. you can use any standard 2.5 HDD in a dell laptop.

They are NOT proprietary. There are only a handful of hard drive makers (Western Digital, Seagate, Hitachi, Toshiba, Samsung, and Fujitsu). Anything else with a hard drive in it has one of the drive manufacturer's drives (listed above) in their products. Dell, HP, Compaq, etc. all buy drives from the list above. Buy a WD internal drive for sure!
