Burn dvd movies with compression?

Hey all,

I was wondering how it is possible to burn movies or tv shows to a disk and still have a lot/high quality. Right now I can only fit about 4 -5 40min clips on it, but how do people fit more? Whats a good program to use?

Thanks

start with nero or mainconcept
use svcd settings, this will make your mpeg's
then use a authoring program like dvdlab pro or ulead
check sourceforge for free programs

good luck

ulead video studio? Isn't that just for editing movies?

What about roxio? Any good? Do most dvd players support svcd? How would I do this?

Thanks Sorry for all the questions lol.

ulead makes a program moviefactory yes it edits as well
will make your svcd
nero and mainconcept does this much better (my opinion)
mainconcept is tougher to work with ,but more control
for a while nero would not do properly
now it does version 7.1.14 or something like that they have newer ,but I stop when it works for me
in nero if you get demo version
make movie
load the video file box on the lower right will say what you want to convert to
above that is setting for conversion
2 hr movie takes about 40 to 50 min to make svcd mpg format
then I use dvdlab pro to author don't use nero it will re-encode you don't want that
there is a learning curve of sorts in all of these types of programs
the programs that are single click don't work very well ,my opinion again
last you should get 2 2hr movies on one disc with very little loss
on monitor or lcd you see a slight diff on Television you don't

im still confused.

I thought svcd were for cd's only? Also, what are all the steps to make a good, high quality, but still compressed movie? What do I do with ulead or mainconcept? Before or after nero?

any of those 3 mentioned will do same thing just diff learning curves and diff reactions because of methods employed
here the setup I use to date
when changing AVI,WMV.mpg to dvd format
nero first
make movie in drop down use svcd or dvd, dvd will be a bigger file less compression higher res.
then after its finished use a authoring program to make your menu's and convert to dvd VOB file format this is if you want to watch on a TV dvd player
with svcd I can fit two 2hr movies on 1- 4gb disc
svcd and vcd are compression methods that will still be viewable on dvd
they are mpg format

Thanks for the info. What about Divx or Xvid? And i thought SVCD was only for cd's and not dvd's?

AVI is divx xvid
AVI encompass's all the compression methods for this format
as stated svcd is mpg format it is just compressed more so you loose some res
this can be seen on high end lcd's or computers
but I can't and my friends can't see the diff on a reg TV monitor
best bet when in doubt do search on net for svcd formats
have a rewriteable dvd disc handy, burn to this, try it in your player
as I am allways experimenting with software I use a re-writeable you can never tell ???
don't mix pal and ntsc dvd formats on one disc
don't mix sound compression freq stick with 42,000, 48,000 or AC3
48 is the common
