The basics are here:

Ultimate is a full pack including both the home premium as well as the business version. Plus there are some reports of extra tweeks that are available in Ultimate specifically for gamers. This has me interested, but they had better be some amazing tweeks for the price difference.

Then there is the "Vista Ultimate Extras" which will apparently also be included in the Ultimate edition, the details of which I have not yet been able to find. At this point, I am leaning towards the Home Premium version until more info is released.

I have been using Microsoft Vista now for about a month or so and I do find it somewhat reliable, but the application support is poor. I also found that driver support seems to be getting better, with devices that I could not install on the beta being supported on the RTM.

I would most definately go for Ultimate, I suppose because the way I look at these things is "I might as well get the best then I dont have to worry about upgrading later on and wasting money". But that's just me..

Can you still play old games like Half-life 2 and Counterstrike: Source on Vista? If you cant then I wont upgrade... I'll give up Vista for those games

well the list of games that won't run on Vista is becoming smaller and smaller.

Yes I can confirm both of those games do run on Microsoft Vista.

DirectX 10 won't be compatible with earlier DirectX versions, and it won't be released for Windows XP. For backward compatibility with current games and hardware, Microsoft plans to include DirectX 9L in Windows Vista.

Hmm, that somewhat suprised me.

It seems at the moment that the RTM version of Vista has a good compatibility with games anyway... Im confused now knowing that the majority of games on Vista seem to run okay.

Sounds like it already has DX 9L included in it then. That would be my assumption anyways.

my POVs..

i see no point in upgrading/getting vista unless you at least get home premium as the base line - you're mainly paying for the features (note: Aeroglass) here to be worth it.. exception is unless you have a crappy old celeron with cheap graphics card on it..

who damn... those screen shots look awesome!!

If you plan on getting a cheap version of vista, get the windows XP cd now! i know that retailers here in Aus are selling them with the upgrade guarantee thing which means you buy a windows XP Home/MCE/Pro/upgrade (excluding academic versions) and get the corresponding version of Vista (Home B/home Prem/Business) and only pay for shipping and handling fees ($47AUD odd bucks i think.. can't remember..).. so in other words its basically free lol.. i don't know about how other countries are handling it..

Re. software compatibility.. just wait a few weeks before/after release and most vendors who's software are worth the money should have a patch ready for Vista.. like how it was done in the past, since vista's core is totally different from XP's..

probably won't be able to get vista until i purchase my new laptop probably well into the next year..

I am running the final version of Vista Enterprise and I haven't run into a game yet that won't run on it. With more time comes more testing...
