Plextor unveils DVD+/-, R/RW CD-RW drive

Oh man, I really want one!

"The PX-708A supports 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD-R, 4x DVD+RW, 2x DVD-RW, 40x CD-R and 24x CD-RW burning. Its reads CDs at 40x max. and DVDs at 12x max.

The drive contains 2MB of data cache and offers a burst transfer rate of 33MBps, allowing a full 4.7GB DVD+R disc to be burned in around eight minutes. The drive ships with an ATA/ATAPI-5 (EIDE) interface. "

I am so sure that its only just around the corner where prices of DVD writers will drop, interest will spark and before long your machine will be the subject of ridicule if you don't have one! All I can say is, bring on that day, because I already have too many CDs after 2 years of broadband. Just think how you could reduce your CD collection if everything was moved onto DVD...

More here. Official Plextor page here.

I think its going to be a very important and big upgrade for everyone who does not already have one.

They are just too expensive right now for me to justify the expense, but I am sick of filling RAID arrays full of good movies that are over 700MB, when with a DVD writer I could chuck wads of them onto one disk! That will be the answer to the CD-city nightmare!

....oh man, there's CDs everywhere in this room! There's too many of them and it freaks me out!

Oh course a DVD writer is the logical consequence....

Yeah I would like to get a DVD writer, but right now I don't think it is worth it. I mean for 300 dollars I can deal with a few cd's. If it comes down soon I might think about it, but not until then.

We will most likely round up the new generation of drives in the coming months, I expect Plextor to provide us with this new drive.

I wish I could... most storage device manufacturers have the policy of getting back review units
Our good friend crazyace wasn't able to keep any of the drives reviewed in our previous round-up.

P66: Here is the *latest* Pioneer 106D DVD Recorder at a bargain price. It's not far off the spec of that Plextor, and I just bought one, because like yourself, I too have broadband.

Pioneer 106D DVD (+/-R, +/-RW) Recorder @ £128.99

Most other places are selling this drive for around £170.00+, so best be quick. That drive has also has many good reviews on various websites.

or, if you don't mind older technology, then this one might suit ...

Panasonic SW-9581-C @ £82.25
