cpu temp variation?

i'm not sure whats going on with my comp right now, i just put in a new mobo along with a new fan and heatsink for my p4. just out of curiosity i watched the bios to see what temp i would be getting, and as soon as i turned on the bios it showed a temp of over 110 degrees F, i opened the case back up and i had the heatsink and fan off in a matter of 10 seconds from when i saw the reading, and the heatsink and processor itself was cooler than room temperature.....

i turned on windows to use hwdoctor and see what reading for temp i would get there, and currently it is showing my cpu temp as -9 degrees...

is this possible???? .... or are the thermometers in my case shot...
