Greetings and help please!

Hello. I am new to this forum and don't know if anyone out there can help me. I have a Toshiba Notebook (Equium m50-216). On ettempting to record through the input socket (microphone minijack on the front of the machine) I only have the option of a mono signal. The 'balance' slider is disabled. This means I can't record in stereo. This is also the input for music recording (there is no seperate 'line in'). Does anyone know how to re-enable this to make it a stereo input?

This is my first time on a forum like this this, so if I haven't given enough information, let me know.
