Sounds like Xwindows is already running under display 0, tty0.

Try to CTRL + f1 to that...see if you have X there.

Remove that file they tell you too and then try again.

just rm /tmp/.X0-lock

Let us know if that works =]

X is started by default under TTY under ctrl+F7

The X security messages suggest that X is running under different use credentials.

When and why are you trying to run that startx command anyway?

OK

Have you tried changing the session type in the login window?
When X hangs, you can kill it with Vtrl+alt+backspace. You should do it before attempting to run X again.

Can you run a plain X server?
Boot into the X runlevel, kill the X you have running. At the command prompt run "X :0". This will give you a X server with no window manager. If that runs then you know the problem is with Gnome or KDE.

Type "telinit 4" (without quotes) and see if you get into X. It seems that it's already started up.
