It would most certainly improve things a lot (unless you are running DOS).
You may need to do a BIOS upgrade to make the thing recognise 256MB. |

BIOS is a piece of special software on a chip on the system motherboard. It is responsible for starting up the computer and initialising critical hardware (including RAM). You can download an updated version from IBM/Lenovo.
