AC97 & DVD decoder problems

Hey everyone, this is the first time i've run into this problem on two different PC's.

1) on the Audio (onboard) i'm getting this weird crackling sound and the mic isn't working properly. Also, Ventrilo is having the problem with voice break up. I'm assuming it's a diver problem. so if someone can verify that that's the problem.

2) On Windows Media 10/11, DVD play back doesn't run. It suggests decoder or diver updates. Updated Drivers, still nothing. Pretty much i'm looking for a WMP decoder if i need it, or if Winamp comes with it. (I'm cheap so anything that doesn't cost any ducketts the better)

On the DVD side of things, there really are no free DVD decoder codecs.

Alternatively, there IS a free DVD player.. VLC. You can download this at:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

If you are too cheap to buy DVD software (w/ codec), this is the best free route to go.

Thank you shark for that adivce I might just man up and spend some cash... on the audio front... I updated the audio drivers now i'm getting this weird static crackling sound when i'm idle on the desk top... it's very annoying... If I get a new sound card would that clear that up?
