I have dismantled an old machine with mother board troubles. I took the hard drive and put in a newer machine (wanting to keep all the data) I am running windows xp pro and I have rebooted and can see the drive in disk manager. But i cannot get a volume (drive letter) or initialise the disk to access the data.

What can I do??

Connections ?

It's probably not matching the jumpers.
I lent my old mp3 20 gb to a friend to copy files to theirs.
It was no problem reading it.
Now it's my music backup.

if it was a boot drive, you cannot install it in another system. XP configures itself for only one motherboard.

Use it as an exernal drive via USB
