Apple's recent patent application suggests plans for a foldable iPhone

Last week brought news that after appearing at various trade shows these last few years, Samsung may have finally listed its long-awaited foldable handset. Not wanting to be left out, it appears that Apple filed another US patent application back in September for what could be a similar device.

The application states the product “may be a laptop computer, a tablet computer, a cellular telephone, a wristwatch, or other electronic device.” While there’s no guarantee that bendable screens will be a feature of future iPhones, it's hard to imagine such technology appearing in other Apple devices.

Long-running reports claim that Apple is already working on a foldable iPhone alongside LG Display, but ETNews believes the company has joined forces with China’s largest display maker, BOE, for the foldable phone. While Samsung provides the OLEDs used in the iPhone X, it seems Apple might move to a different supplier for the bendy device as it looks to reduce its reliance on its chief rival.

Although Samsung’s president of mobile, Koh Dong-Jin, did say the company hopes to release a foldable handset next year, it looks as if early production issues have pushed the release date back to 2019. It’s likely that Apple's version will take even longer to arrive, with 2020 a rumored production start date.

"As the head of the business, I can say our current goal is next year," said Koh Dong-Jin. "When we can overcome some problems for sure, we will launch the product."

I'm not sure I need a phone that can do what the picture shows. How about a phone that when in your pocket and a little weight is put on it doesn't break. I'd be pretty happy with that as a start

I think that is the idea since a lot of people put their phone in their butt pocket.

We already know they can make bendable screens, but what about circuit boards or does it become a ribbon mess?

Flexible PCB is readily producible but components themselves don't bend and can break off a board when flexed too much. With so many components in a tight space, it's difficult but certainly not impossible.

How about a normal looking phone that CAN flex a little if needed. All I'd want out of this technology is a really durable phone.

Isn't the biggest issue making flexible batteries? Although I tend to ignore battery articles because they never come to fruition, did I miss one about flexible batteries?

Current battery technology is too profitable, so I doubt we'll see significant changes or improvements any time soon.

I would guess they would probably to compact the non-flexible components on the top and bottom of the phone.

With current battery technology I suppose they could do something like this:

Well, they will either make a foldable phone, or they will just own the patent so they can sue anyone who does have a bendable phone, because it "infringes". This is the new trend now right?
