According to this Digitimes' report, NVIDIA and ATI have not been able to meet chip demand for its GeForceFX and Radeon products, a noticeable shortage has been experienced with Taiwanese manufacturers, Digitimes says, both companies have also prioritized OEM orders.

Limited supply of Nvidia’s GeForce FX 5800 (NV30) and GeForce FX 5600 (NV31) series chips has pushed some demand to ATI, card makers said. However, a shortage of ATI’s Radeon 9700 and Radeon 9500 chips has been reported and output of its new-generation Radeon 9800 (R350) series has also failed to meet demand.

Despite ATI’s coming out on top in recent performance comparisons, the supply problem will likely cost it the opportunity to grab market share from Nvidia, card makers said.

It means that ATI still doesn't have the horsepower to take on Nvidia head-to-head. I guess we're not seeing "3Dfx Part II" anytime soon...which is a good thing because competition keeps prices lower and quality higher. Now I just wish a few more companies would get in the game, because that "the way it's meant to be played" thing surely is annoying. I had hopes for Xabre but...dang
