Audigy 5.1 problems

I have been asked by a friend to help him with a problem. He bought a PC (high spec) about 2 years ago. Everything was working fine.

Now however he has been getting sound problems, first loss of three speakers then intermittent loss of the other two, then no sound at all.

I tried reinstalling the audigy software - no luck
I tried using the recovery disc to repair windows then drivers - no luck
I tried reinstalling windows and then drivers, this helped and I now have the left and right rear speakers active but for the life of me I cannot get the centre or other two surround speakers to work.
Digital is off as the speakers are analogue.

Windoes XP - home edition is the OS.
I have checked the cabling and it all looks ok.

Anyone have similier problems?

As regards playback, is that with CMSS enabled or disabled? The current Audigy Drivers don't do a Stereo X 2 mode so it may be normal in that sense, if however you have CMSS enabled & are only getting Stereo output then something is wrong.
