I had a cable modem (motorola Surfboard S5120) set up to my Dell Desktop, but my hard drive failed the other day from a power outage, so I thought I would just connect my cable modem to my Dell Inspirion laptop…but it's not working. I connected the cable modem to the computer (it has windows XP) and it said that it installed it- I also installed using the installation disk. The user guide on the installation disk said that you should go to START, RUN, CMD, and then type in IPCONFIG. Nothing shows up for my Cable Moden. If I try to open Internet Explorer or anything- it wants to dial-up, but that's what my dad has been using this laptop with.

Anyone have any ideas- I think I have tried every button on the computer- Internet Options, Modem Options, etc. I even tried to connect using an ethernet connection instead of the USB..

Thanks!!!

go thru View Network Connections and disable the dialup connection

then use right-click->properties on the LAN and verify that DHCP is active.
