I have a intel p4 (the old ones 256 K of cache XD)currently running at 100MhZ bus speed, cpu-z says 400MhZ is the rated bus speed, i have a intel celeron that runs at 533Mhz could i run this in the 400mhz socket? i would rather ask here then damage my board (even though a new one is on order). and if not what problems would i run into doing this? BTW the socket and the CPUs are 478

EDIT** I put the Celeron in the 400mhz board and got nothing, no post... so obviously you cant... and i didnt damage the board at all

No. You can only run CPUs that are designed for the board. Check the mobo manufactuer to see what CPUs the board will take.

What will happen? It simply won't work or you'll damage the CPU or motherboard or both.

That cpu wont just downsize to the 400mhz which the mobo can handle. Its not like other things that will only use what can be used. Like Tedster said, dont try it if you arent ready to harm your system.
