Can I run the same HDD with different mobos?

Hi all,

My current set-up is MSI mobo and P4 3.0E with newly XP-installed harddrive. My question is if I run my old harddrive, which I used with ECS board, with my new MSI board, will the old OS and programs run without any errors? Or will the old drive and OS will corrupt? Or is it that if I stall MSI's drivers(like sound driver, I can't think of any other drivers for motherboard besides BIOS) on old HDD, I can run my old OS and programs without a problem? I am really waiting for the replies from you guys, thanks?

You can try, and you may be lucky. If you ARE able to boot up, you'll need to run a windows "repair" in order to install the correct drivers, but a lot of the times, the computer will simply freeze when you try, as it doesn't know what to do with the chipset drivers etc.

But personally if it were me, I'd go for a fresh clean install anyways. If your getting a new motherboard, why not re-install windows too just to give you a whole new computer? That's what I'd do.

You don't really need to boot up. The repair works when booting from the XP CD.
