Cant play CDs but can play DVDs fine

My dvd combo was working fine until a few days ago and now it will recognise and play dvds with no problems but when i put a cd in it it dont work at all, could someone please help as i need to install something from a disk but cant until i sort this problem out!! here is all the information that i got

What happened then? Did you try to play a copy-protected CD which installed something to your computer? Have you tried uninstalling Nero?

ive only just got the pc and i installed nero 6 to burn music and dvds and it was working fine and then i had just finished burning a cd and then it stopped working!! now when i go to nero and burn a cd disk it automatically ejects the disk when i press burn.
It wont detect any type of cd disk but it will burn dvds and play dvds without any problems. I`m not sure if any settings have been changed to stop it reading cds. I tried uninstalling nero but it was still the same!!!

Its possible the CD laser has died, it is different from the DVD one.
