Can't validate WinXP Home for updates

  1. I had to reinstall XP Home. It is an old version, back from 2002. It reinstalls and activates just fine on the old Gateway hardware that it came on. However, when I attempt to run Windows Update it tells me that due to an "unknown error" it cannot validate my installation of Windows, and as such I can't get any of the patches, service packs, etc.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Well, I did just that. A very dedicated tech named Khan walked me through shutting down the update service, deleting a file, restarting the service, and rebooting. It fixed the problem. If I could remember all the steps I took I would post them here, but I can't.
